This is from a shoot I did for Nor·Mal Mag, featuring ‘Slimer’. Nor·Mal is based around amplifying the voices of subcultures and communities around Ireland & in this sppecific issue, we wanted to focus on people with interesting and unique physical features. For instance, hair. I did a sit-down interview with Slimer regarding his experiences with hair growth and wanted to create a photo set that displayed his hair in motion.

The Process
Meeting Slimer on the day of the shoot, I happened to notice that it had been raining that day, making the paths and roads light reflective. I wanted to take advantage of this in favour of an indoor shoot, which was typical of Nor·Mal. This means that there are many subtle highlights all over these pictures that I found pleasing to the eye.

Nor·Mal can loosely be considered a counter-culture magazine, so I wanted to embrace Galway City’s wall art. Most of the content for this issue was captured in Galway so it was important to me to incorporate the artistic nature of the city’s west end.

I wanted to capture Slimer’s hair in motion. Thanks to his co-operation, I was able to capture him headbanging to demonstrate this. It also allowed me to highlight the fine detail of each individual strand of hair in a way that celebrates it.

To compliment the hi-fi style I settled on there are a few photos in the set that embrace sepia tones. In this instamce, you can see that the colours in this photo bring the strands of hair and the highlights in the water to life.
